Me I See in You, 2023
10 Min, Analog-Stop-Motion-Animation, HD video, color, sound
Even before our presence becomes your future: The story takes place between "us" and "you". In a moment, you become "us", namely the narrator of this story, but "us" is already in a place where we can no longer be like "you".
Me I See in You is an analog stop-motion film made up of around 4,000 individual images, without any digital post-production. Since I worked in the care sector, I excluded all other digital options and stuck with handmade to portray "us", to transmit emotions and voice of "us" who work in care institutions. "We", the "I", have seen the reality behind it, which is not very pleasant, and you will see it too, or maybe it's right in front of you.
Now, however, I have an idea of tomorrow in mind, where the separation of the "we", the "you" and the "me" disappears and everyone can hold someone else's hand even before your presence becomes our past.

The film project Me I See in You focuses on guest workers who came to Germany as caregivers. It addresses views on identity and nationality, attitudes towards foreign cultures and religions, parallel societies and racism. What does it mean when care becomes an industry? What are its political and economic backgrounds? How do the individuals working with Germans in need of care handle this? It is based on interviews with former and current care workers who came to Germany in the 1960s and 2010s.
Written and animated by Fumiko Kikuchi,

With gratitude to everyone involved in care work, and especially those who shared their story with me.
